The Story & History of Kameeldoring Camping

Kameeldoring Camping has a rich history that began with Doppies Nel's family roots. On December 23, 1893, Piet Nel purchased the Rooipad farm at a government auction during British rule. In 1910, the Union government acquired the Augrabies Falls and 6,000 acres from him for £9,000, making it the only well-known waterfall ever sold. Doppies' great-grandfather, Piet Nel, laid the foundation for this, which continued when Drienie Nel met maize farmer Francois Nel in 1963 while teaching at Volksool Bothaville. Drienie was a daughter of Kolie Nel (one of Piet Nel's 10 children).

Francois was the youngest child of Daniël Nel a VGK missionary from the former Rhodesia.

The waters of the Oranje River intrigued Francois after years of drought and depending on rain for planting maize in the Free State. Therefore he decided to move to Augrabies and bought the farm Petit next to the magnificent Augrabies waterfalls.

Doppies, a product of 2 x Nel, has always envisioned making the most of their land by establishing a private game ranch and to promote ecotourism.

Francois Nel and his wife, along with their dedicated team, are proudly continuing the legacy of the hospitality business started by Doppies and Santie in 2018.
